News of the Field Lincoln Labs 50-Year Review Massachusetts Institute of Technologys Lincoln Laboratory has pioneered advanced electronics since its beginning in February 1951 as a Federally Funded Research and Development Center. Its fundamental mission has remained little changed since its inception: the application of science and advanced technologies to critical problems of national security. Early Lincoln Laboratory research focused on the design and prototype development of the Dew Line and BMEWS networks of ground-based radars and aircraft control centers for continental air defense. The above paragraph began a brief article in our last issue highlighting some of Lincoln Labs many achievements. Since then, a remarkable tome has appeared, the Lincoln Laboratory Journal, volume 12, number 2, 2000. The Mercurians proudly claim one of the two guest editors as one of our own, William W. Ward, who worked with William P. Delaney. Dr. Ward has graced our pages on occasion, but we are not being overly modest to say that Antenna will never look like this Journal, complete with 444 glossy pages replete with photographs, graphs, and diagrams, many in color. This recollection and celebration of the work at the Laboratory includes an overview article by Ward and Delaney, plus articles on major radar developments. If radar is your interest, or if the workings and products of a major scientific and technology research facility interest you, you will do well to track down a copy of this treasure. |
